When we talk about selling stuff online, we often speak about sales, buyers, clients, customers, investors, attendees, and conversions…

After all, that’s what we want, right?

Our goal is to convert someone who’s new to us—new to our offers—into a ‘buying unit’ as quickly as possible.

Here’s the thing, though…  The monkey wrench is thrown into every well-built campaign if you will…

There is a person at the other end of every single one of your transactions, texts, and emails.

If you’re good at what you do, you can paint a ‘picture’ of who that person is, what they like, what they fear, and what their ambitions are. Then, you can use that ‘picture’ to write copy that’ll do the selling for you.

The fact remains that they’re people just like you and me.

Now, people psychologically need to go through a few steps to buy…

(Seriously, hang on tight. This is about as real as it gets when selling stuff online.)

To get someone to buy…

First, they have to become aware of your business and your offer…

Then, they have to be interested in what you’re doing…

Something about your marketing or sales presentation needs to help them desire your stuff…

And then, they take action.

Awareness. Interest. Desire. Action.

That’s the A.I.D.A. principle taught in every business curriculum in every college.

The first time I read about it in a textbook, I knew it would be on a test, so I memorized it.

It wasn’t until ten years later, when I started buying traffic that it finally made sense.

It’s simple and extraordinarily effective if you consider its implications for your business.

Since you’re reading this, I assume that you want more sales…

More customers.

To attract more customers, you need to get more people to take action. In this case, you need to get folks to add your offer to their shopping cart.

You need to figure out how to increase people’s desire to click your website’s “Add to Cart” button.

In order to increase their desire, you need to get more people interested in what you’re doing.

And finally, to get more people to take an interest, you need to increase awareness.

Now, I understand this backward approach might be a little bit of a mindf#ck, so let’s break it down a little differently.

You want more customers.

Well, let’s go back to where someone first learns about your business and offer.

To get a new paying customer…

  1. They need to see your ad on Facebook or search for something you rank for in Google.
  2. Then, they need to click that ad and opt-in for something. A report. A video…
  3. From there, they need to take the time to review what they downloaded from you…
  4. As they consume your content (it doesn’t matter what it is), they must voluntarily move toward a purchase.
  5. They then need to click an add to cart button…
  6. Then, they need to find their credit card and type the numbers into their computer screen or their phone.
  7. … And finally, click the submit button!

Only then are they a paying customer!

The path to a successful sales funnel isn’t linear…

It will take months, thousands (probably tens of thousands of dollars) in advertising, and many sleepless nights until you figure it out.

Even then, you realize that it isn’t one thing that makes the difference for you…

It’s tens, maybe hundreds of SMALL things that you’re doing right that combine to get you more sales.
